“Science Never Tasted So Good” — That’s the tagline of Kennewick’s newest ice cream shop.
Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice cream is giving the Tri-Cities a new twist on a favorite treat. The shop opened Feb. 11 at 321 N. Columbia Center Blvd in Kennewick.
At Sub Zero, customers choose their ice cream base, the flavor of syrup they want and mix-ins such as candy, fruit and nuts. Then they watch it freeze with a blast of liquid nitrogen.
They offer custom options, as well as fun flavors such as Chocolate Conduction (chocolate ice cream and fudge with brownie bites), Magnetic Mind (Mint ice cream and fudge with Oreos and Andes Mints), Key Lime Voltage (Key lime cheesecake) and Tropical Turbine (Black Raspberry and coconut sauce with mixed berries and coconut flakes).
Sub Zero also has ice cream cakes and is available for catering.
In addition to sweet treats, the company offers science presentations for schools — covering topics such as Nitrogen Safety, Atmosphere, Elements: Nitrogen, Condensation/Evaporation, The Ideal Gas Law and Water Crystal Structure.
Brazilian grocery
Tri-Cities shoppers can now experience a taste of South America, with a new Brazilian grocery store in Richland.
Brazilian Joint Market and Homebrew Supplies is now open at 1377 George Washington Way.
The store offers a wide variety of Brazilian staples, as well as brewing supplies for beer, yogurt, kombucha and more. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, they also do custom orders.
The variety is endless with an array of products ranging from tea and coffee to imported sausages and snack to beauty supplies you can’t find anywhere else.
Brazilian Joint Market is open are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Foster Thrift
A new thrift store benefiting a foster service is opening soon in Kennewick.
Foster Thrift, run by Foster First child placement agency, is taking over the old Goodwill near Kennewick High School, at 810 S. Dayton St.
The thrift store is opening for donations on Valentine’s Day and hopes to host its grand opening on St. Patrick’s Day in March. Director of Community Engagement
Venus Lomeli said they are looking for all manner of donations, from clothes to household goods, kitchenware and even furniture.
“We want to let folks know there’s a new resource coming, so they can come drop off their gently used items for a cause,” she said. “Through the thrift store, we’ll be able to have funding to take our kids to camp, allocate funding for birthdays, buy school supplies and clothes. It’s going to be a great resource to serve our kiddos and our foster parents.”
Lomeli said that not all foster parents are wealthy, so the store will help these families afford activities such as school sports and other after school activities, in addition to helping foster parents with special occasions like birthdays.
Drop off hours kick off Monday, Feb. 14 and will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Donors can pull around the back of the building to the designated drop off area.
Foster First is based out of Yakima, but will be opening a local office at the thrift store location.
Raan Coffee
A new coffee shop with a focus on serving others has opened in Pasco.
Raan’s mission centers on “Christ, community, and coffee.”
According to their website, founders Ryan and Ruth Garza share a love for serving others, building community and enjoying great coffee.
Ryan is a special education teacher in Pasco, and Ruth was a student counselor. After moving to Washington they decided to open a coffee shop where they can share that passion with others.
They hope to create a sense of comfort every time a customer steps through the doors or picks up a cup of coffee in the drive-thru.
The shop is at 9425 Sandifur Parkway, and is open 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Dutch Brothers
Dutch Brothers Coffee is in the early stages of adding a new Richland location.
According to permits submitted to the city of Richland, their newest drive-thru location will be at 490 Wellsian Way near the intersection of Wellsian and Duportail Street to the west and Stevens Drive to the east.
The project value is estimated at $1 million.
