Special football games Thursday pave way for Tri-Cities playoffs next week

Most area high school football teams, prepping for upcoming playoffs, move regular-season games to Thursday

The majority of area high school football teams will be playing on Thursday, Oct. 30, to give those teams getting ready for post-season playoffs an extra day to prepare.

While the big game will be Kamiakin at Richland at 7 p.m. — the winner earns the Mid-Columbia Conference’s No. 2 4A Round of 32 berth; the loser has to play Tuesday against the Greater Spokane League’s No. 3 team, Lewis & Clark, in a chance for the Round of 32 — the majority of Thursday games involve the 2A and 1A classes.

All 2A Central Washington Athletic Conference teams, as well as 1A South Central Athletic Conference squads, will play their games Thursday.

Teams are prepping for Sunday’s Round of 32 draws to determine their playoff opponents.

The committees will meet and rank teams from 1 to 32 for all 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A tournaments. The 2B and 1B classifications maintain their state playoff formats.

In fact, the 2B Eastern Washington Athletic Conference teams will be playing league crossover contests this weekend to determine regional crossover seeds for the following week.

One matchup that catches the eye is Kittitas visiting Tri-Cities Prep at Chiawana High School at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Southeast 1B Grape and Wheat divisions will be playing crossover games this weekend to determine regional seeds.

Richland’s Liberty Christian, which lost 36-28 at DeSales last Friday, will play host to Garfield-Palouse at 7 p.m., Friday, at Fran Rish Stadium.

Cross country

The boys and girls District 6 meet, featuring the MCC and the GSL, starts at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1.

This is for both Class 4A and 3A teams.

On the same day at Apple Ridge, the District 5 Class 2A CWAC meet starts at 12:15 p.m.

Finally, District 5/6 competition begins at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Naches Valley for all 1A runners.

The goal for everyone is to qualify for the WIAA State High School Cross Country State Championships, which are set for Saturday, Nov. 8, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Girls soccer

Chiawana ran the table in MCC regular-season play, going 9-0 to earn the No. 1 seed to district.

The District 6 tournament began last week against the Greater Spokane League schools, and the two winners bracket semifinals are set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.

Richland will visit Lewis & Clark, while Chiawana hosts Mead. The winners earn 4A state tournament berths.

The team that comes through the losers bracket — winning the final contest on Nov. 8 — earns the final state berth.

Meanwhile, Walla Walla will host University, and Kennewick visits Mt. Spokane, in the District 3A tournament on Saturday. Winners earn state tournament berths. Both games are set for 1 p.m.

Whichever team wins the third-place game, set for Nov. 8, earns the district’s last state tourney berth.

Girls swimming

The MCC’s district dive meet is set for today in Walla Walla.

The league’s district swim meet will be held in Walla Walla on Friday and Saturday.

The state swimming and dive meet is set for Nov. 14-15 in Federal Way.

Prep volleyball

The final night of MCC play is Thursday, Oct. 30.

District 6 tournament play for both 4A and 3A begins Nov. 1. Three teams from both tournaments will advance to their respective state tournaments, set for Nov. 21-22 in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The State 2A and 1A tournaments will be held Nov. 14-15, while 1B and 2B will run Nov. 12-13.

All state tournaments will be held in the SunDome.

CBC sports

The Columbia Basin College men’s and women’s soccer teams will host regional playoff games on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Times and opponents have yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, CBC’s volleyball team is one game out of an East Region playoff spot, with the regular season ending Nov. 7.

Regional tournament play will be held Nov. 15-16 at four different sites. The Elite 8 finals will be held Nov. 21-23 on the CBC campus in Pasco.
