After they’d dated for a month, Adam Hand and his girlfriend broke up. But she continued to worry he might harm himself and agreed to spend some time with him one night last week.

Before the night was over, she was stabbed 10 times and narrowly escaped his alleged plot to kill her and himself, according to newly released Benton County court documents.

After she got away, Hand, 20, intentionally swerved into the path of oncoming pickup truck, causing a dramatic crash June 17 in Kennewick, said investigators.

He is now being held in the Benton County jail in lieu of $1 million bail on charges of attempted first-degree murder, vehicular assault and unlawful imprisonment.

Court documents say the Richland man allegedly had previously tried to die by suicide after the couple’s breakup. His ex-girlfriend kept in contact with him because she was concerned.

She agreed to go rollerblading with him on June 17 at the Carousel of Dreams in the Southridge area of Kennewick. They were in his car when they began arguing, and she said she would walk home.

He convinced her to get back into the car but he refused to stop at her apartment complex and kept driving on the Bob Olson Parkway.

She told investigators Hand was shaking and she believed she was in trouble. He allegedly grabbed her phone when she tried to text a neighbor, court documents said.

She pleaded for him to let her out, but he reportedly refused and drove faster, she said.

He later allegedly admitted to police that he planned to drive to Richland and crash head-on into a semi-truck, killing them both.

But she grabbed the steering wheel and tried to swerve the car off the road. Hand stopped along the side of the road and allegedly pulled out a black knife.

He apologized and said, “You’re going to die,” court documents said.

She said he stabbed her 10 times in about 20 seconds before she could get out of the passenger seat. Still wearing her rollerblades, she skated toward some homes on 27th Avenue.

“She recalled every time she took a breath, blood would squirt out of her neck,” court documents said. “She stated the defendant then sped away from the location at a high rate of speed.”

Police said she suffered serious wounds to her face, neck, arms and shoulder.

Hand continued on the parkway, then suddenly swerved into the path of an approaching pickup near West 15th Place. about 11:30 p.m.

The pickup driver tried to avoid hitting him head-on, but they still collided, flipping Hand’s car.

Hand was checked a local hospital to be checked before being taken to jail. The truck driver chipped a tooth in the crash, court documents said.

Kennewick Officer Dakota Rogers, who was in the ambulance with Hand on his way to the hospital said, “Adam began punching himself in the head over and over again and yelling, ‘Why didn’t you just let me die?’”

Hand allegedly said he had “gotten tired” of how his ex-girlfriend treated him and other people.

“Defendant stated he had thought about killing himself and killing her, but he ‘wanted to talk to her,’ and said there was a football player who crashed into a semi-truck, and he thought that this would be the fasted way to kill both him and (the woman,)“ the court documents said.

When he confronted her earlier in the Carousel of Dreams parking lot, she “blew him off,” he reportedly told investigators.

Hand allegedly admitted she asked him to let her out of his car and he stopped her from leaving.

He also allegedly admitted to grabbing a Buck knife and stabbing her, said court documents, though he only remembered stabbing her twice.
