Suspected drunk driver hits man trying to fix trailer on shoulder of I-82
An allegedly drunk Prosser driver hit a man standing next to his trailer along the shoulder of Interstate 82 near Grandview late Saturday night.
Gregory C. Solewin, 34, of San Angelo, Texas, had pulled to the side of the eastbound lanes of the interstate about a mile outside of Grandview to secure a trailer he was pulling with his Ford F-150, the Washington State Patrol said in a traffic memo.
State patrol investigators believe Ivan Jimenez, 31, of Prosser, was drunk as he approached the pickup and trailer in his 2021 Toyota Camry. He slammed into the trailer and hit Solewin about 10:30 p.m.
Solewin was rushed to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, where he was treated and since been released.
Jimenez was taken to Prosser Memorial Hospital before being booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of vehicular assault.
Prosecutors asked on Monday for $10,000 bail for Jimenez. Deputy Prosecutor Anita Petra said while he doesn’t have a criminal history, Jimenez poses a threat to the community. She also asked for him to sign up for alcohol monitoring if he was released.
Defense attorney Jordan Castellano said her client has been married for a year and works as a cook.
She also noted in the past that similar defendants have been released on their promise of following court orders.
Judge Diana Ruff said she wasn’t comfortable with releasing Jimenez without bail because of the crime, and set bail at $5,000.
He’s expected to be back in court Thursday.
