6-year-old girl found in running Richland pickup with driver slumped over the wheel

Richland police arrested a suspected drunk driver passed out at the wheel of a truck with a 6-year-old and a dog inside. A woman also was in the pickup.

Police were called to the Uptown Shopping Center about 8:15 p.m. to check on a man slumped over the wheel of a running vehicle, Richland police posted on its Facebook page.

The pickup was at the Symons Street exit, police said.

Inside, officers found a man at the wheel who was believed to be intoxicated. The woman, a 6-year-old girl and a dog also were in the truck.

The man was arrested for DUI, and police said they would request charges for reckless endangerment and drug possession, as well.

Police didn’t list the driver’s name.

The other occupants were taken to a home in the area and are safe, Richland police said.

Richland police suggest anyone needing help with substance abuse reach out to the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration helpline at 800-662-4357.
