A second pedestrian this month has been hit and killed in the same stretch of Highway 395 just across the Washington state line in Oregon.

Both fatalities were near Milepost 2 between Umatilla and Interstate 82 before daylight, according to the Oregon State Police.

Most recently on Thursday, Dec. 11, Tony J. McCorkindale, 39, of Pendleton was walking across the highway in an unlighted area about 5:15 a.m.

He was hit by a northbound Toyota Scion driven by Jose Trinidad Mariano, 37, of Hermiston, according to state police.

McCorkindale died before he could be taken to a hospital. Trinidad Mariano was not injured.

Ten days earlier, Breann Hailey Mayberry, 31, of Umatilla, was found dead in the same area of the highway shortly before 6 a.m., said state police.

The driver did not stop, but while investigators were at the crash scene they saw a damaged white Freightliner semi and trailer being towed down the highway.

The damage was consistent with evidence at the accident site, and the Freightliner was seized, according to state police.

The driver, Timothy A. Brown, 66, of Yakima, was arrested for failing to perform duties of a driver to stop after the Dec. 1 collision, according to state police.
