Weekend fire tears through Prosser market. Everything inside destroyed

The contents of a Prosser business were destroyed after a fire broke out in the Sixth Avenue market this weekend.

Witnesses spotted smoke coming from Garcia’s Market about 9 p.m. Saturday. The business was closed at the time, West Benton Fire Rescue said in a release on Monday.

The fire appeared to start in some electrical equipment in a back room, said Capt. Andy Babcock. Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the eaves. The firefighters on the scene used two hoses and a fan to push smoke back in order to get into the business, the release said.

While firefighters asked for more fire trucks to be sent from neighboring areas, they didn’t end up needing them and canceled the request before they arrived.

They soon extinguished the blaze, but heavy smoke and water damage resulted in a complete loss of everything inside, the department said.

The business opened its doors in 2022.

Several people on social media were disappointed in the loss of the business, which they said was run by good people and provided excellent food.
