Woman crossing street near Kennewick grocery hit and killed

A woman was hit and killed Wednesday evening as she walked across Washington Street south of Eighth Avenue near the Kennewick Red Apple Market.

Magdalena Castillo, 75, died before she could be taken to a hospital, despite people who were in the area and then members of the Kennewick Fire Department trying to save her life, according to Kennewick police.

She was the third pedestrian killed this year in Kennewick crossing a street without using a crosswalk, said Kennewick Police Commander Isaac Merkl.

Castillo was crossing the five-lane street from the west to the east between two streetlights and wearing dark clothing as two vehicles were heading north about 6:20 p.m., according to police

One car stopped, but the other hit her as she had almost reached the sidewalk, Merkl said.

The driver who hit her remained at the accident site and cooperated with investigators, said Kennewick police. They found no evidence that alcohol, drugs or speeding were involved.

The name of the driver had not been released Thursday morning.

Washington Street was closed until 9 p.m. as police investigated. Anyone with information is asked to call 509-628-0333.

Other Kennewick pedestrian deaths this year included Bryan Guyll, 61, who was crossing south on Gage Boulevard near Costco in an area without a marked crosswalk about 8:30 a.m. June 16.

Then on July 28, Daphne Rothfork, 71, of Kennewick, was hit and killed as she tried to cross 27th Avenue in Kennewick about 6:45 a.m.

Neither was in a crosswalk.
