Learn tips for taking a safe, comfortable day hike or backpacking trip

Discover the art of backpacking with the Inter-Mountain Alpine Club (I-MAC) at its 2025 Backpacking School this April at Columbia Basic College in Pasco.

Perfect for beginners, the program spans two full-day sessions to equip you with the essentials for safe and comfortable day hiking and multi-day trips.

When & Where:

Day 1: Saturday, April 12, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (In Class Lectures at CBC in Pasco)

Day 2: Sunday, April 13, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. (Hands on outdoor demos at Leslie Groves Park, Richland.)

What You’ll Learn:

The 10 Essentials, Leave No Trace, clothing, conditioning, packs, tents, sleeping systems, map and topography basics, compass and route planning, navigation strategy, digital navigation using smart phones, cooking and nutrition, hygiene and water purification, using the Internet, GPS, cell phones, stoves, other gear, first aid, safety, pets, children, and rescue techniques and more.

No prior experience is needed, but a basic fitness level is recommended.

The school culminates in overnight backpacking trips led by I-MAC trip leaders.

The course includes lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and optional overnight backpacking trips guided by I-MAC experts.

Experienced club members teach each topic, ensuring you’re ready for weekend adventures. The school is free and open to the public!

Read “The Backpacker’s Field Manual” by Rick Curtis.
