Months after tragic plane crash, Tri-City Raceway honors NASCAR legend
A giant of the Tri-Cities racing community will be honored this weekend.
Before Greg “the Biff” Biffle became one of the biggest names in NASCAR, he was a local favorite, dominating races between the Portland, Ore., area and the Tri-Cities.
Even after his storied NASCAR career, Biffle found time to return to the Tri-Cities racing in the ARCA Menards Series West races.
Biffle, his wife Cristina and both of their children, along with three others, died in a plane crash while attempting to land at a North Carolina airport on Dec. 18
Biffle is credited with putting Pacific Northwest racing on the map.
He loved the West Richland track so much that at one point he even considered buying it.
Biffle was named as one of the “75 Greatest NASCAR Drivers of All Time” by the organization in 2023.
His last race in the Tri-Cities was in August, snagging a third place finish for the Sigma Performance Services Chevrolet team.
The deaths hit the Tri-City Raceway community hard.
This weekend’s Menards NAPA AutoCare 150 is being run as the Greg Biffle Memorial.
“This race means a great deal to our racing community,” said Laci Tolar, project manager of Tri-City Raceway.
“Greg’s story started right here in the Northwest, and bringing the ARCA Menards Series West to Tri-City Raceway to honor his legacy is something we’re incredibly proud of. Fans are going to witness an unforgettable night of racing.”
Former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standout and ARCA record-holder Hailie Deegan is scheduled to make her first appearance.
The event also will feature Hobby Stock and Mini Stock races.
Gates open Saturday at 3 p.m. with races starting at 5 p.m.
Grandstands also will be open for free from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
