CBC fall sports teams among best in Northwest + Top prep football games this week
I’m not sure if Columbia Basin College’s fall sports programs have had better seasons as a whole as the Hawks are having now.
The CBC women’s and men’s soccer teams are both atop their East Region standings, while the volleyball team, as of Tuesday night, sits in second place in the East Region standings but is one of the best in the entire Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.
The CBC women’s soccer team is 12-0-1 overall, is second in the latest coaches poll, and 10-0-1 in East Region play.
Hawks head coach Omar Anderson boasts a pretty strong scoring lineup, with Alexis Olivas (Davis of Yakima grad) leading the way with 8 goals, 5 assists for 21 points.
Kassadi Suitonu (Southridge) has 5 goals and 5 assists, Ana Andrade (Wahluke) adds 6 goals and 2 assists, and Camryn Thoreson (Kennewick) has 4 goals and 6 assists.
Anderson’s defense has been shored up on the back end with three goalkeepers who have contributed: Jayauna Keister (Wilson-Tacoma), Raquel Palmeira (Hawaii) and Kylie Patocka (Nevada).
Meanwhile, Martin Ramirez’s men’s soccer team is ranked No. 3 in the latest NWAC Coaches Poll.
The Hawks are 9-2 overall (7-2 East Region).
The team has a heavy Yakima Valley influence, with Johnny Ramirez (Eisenhower-Yakima) having scored 11 goals and 2 assists to lead the Hawks with 24 points.
Other top scoring threats have been Raymundo Mendez (Davis-Yakima) with 5 goals and 8 assists; Gabriel Delgado (Southridge) with 5 goals and 4 assists; and Diego Lopez (East Valley-Yakima) with 3 goals and 5 assists.
Jose Corona (Grandview) has been the team’s top keeper, with 36 saves and a 0.69 goals-per-game average.
Hector Godinez (Toppenish) has also been a strong backup in net.
Finally, DiShondra Goree’s women’s volleyball team has been nothing but outstanding this season.
As of Tuesday night, Goree’s Hawks have a 21-1 overall record (9-1 East Region), and are ranked second in the latest NWAC Coaches Poll.
Hoklulani Sagapolu (Utah) has been the team’s most outstanding player so far, garnering 204 kills to lead the Hawks.
Lucendy Perez (Chiawana) is right behind with 131 kills, while Grace Morby (Kennewick) is third with 104 kills. Morby also has a team-best 66 blocks.
Josephine Thompson (Manson) is the CBC leader is assists with 442, while Abbey Bonnington (Chiawana) is tops for CBC in digs with 314.
All three CBC teams will be involved in NWAC postseason play in the coming weeks.
Prep football
There will be no Chiawana football game this week.
The Riverhawks — who clinched the Mid-Columbia Conference title last week in a 21-20 win over visiting Southridge — was set to play host to Mt. Si on Friday.
However, because of bad air quality last week, Mt. Si’s conference game was postponed last Friday.
The game was rescheduled this week to Monday, meaning the team would have to play twice this week.
So Mt. Si dropped out.
Chiawana head coach Scott Bond said that instead of trying to finding a replacement for Mt. Si, he and his staff elected to just take the week off.
“We are just taking the bye for Week 8,” said Bond. “It lets us get healthy and hopefully be at our best heading into the playoffs.”
The toughest part was this was to be Chiawana’s Homecoming week.
Instead, the Riverhawks will hold a Homecoming event at Edgar Brown Stadium, starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
There will be a staff and student barbecue, a powder puff game, a boys volleyball game, and the announcement of Homecoming royalty.
▪ The top prep football games this week involve a Class 4A game, one in the 2B ranks, and a 1B shootout.
The Class 4A game pits Richland at Kamiakin (7 p.m., Friday) at Lampson Stadium.
This will basically be a playoff for the No. 2 seed for the MCC 4A schools heading into the Week 10 regional crossovers.
After losing two of their first three games, the host Braves have been on a roll.
But the Bombers have shown some brilliance on both offense and defense.
The 2B Eastern Washington Athletic Conference title will be up for grabs Friday night when River View visits Columbia-Burbank.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
The two schools are both 3-0, and it’s a reminder of the old YVA 1A cross river rivalry these two schools have had over the past four decades.
Finally, Liberty Christian takes on Pomeroy in a Southeast 1B showdown involving the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the conference standings.
The game will actually take place at Southridge High School, at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Patriots have yet to lose a game this season, and have a 6-0 record.
▪ Quick reminder that Walla Walla plays Hanford at 7 p.m. Friday.
The game will be held at Hanford High School’s field in North Richland.
The Falcons normally have played their home games at Fran Rish Stadium, on the campus of Richland High School.
However, Hanford is slowly moving some of their home games to its own campus.
The Wa-Hi game will be their second this season at Hanford High.
Jim Zorn coming to Tri-Cities
Forge Youth Mentoring is hosting a night with former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jim Zorn.
Zorn will speak at the event, which is set for 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, at Bethel Church in Richland.
It’s the group’s first dinner event to benefit kids in the Tri-Cities area. Forge hopes to make it an annual event.
The night will feature a three-course meal, raffle prizes, stories from those impacted by mentoring, and a talk given by Zorn.
Zorn will also sign autographs after the event.
Single tickets to the event cost $65, and a full table for eight will cost $520.
Registration for the event to purchase tickets ends on Friday, Oct. 21.
To register, go to forgeyouthmentoring.ejoinme.org/brighter, or call Matt Nash, Forge Youth Mentoring Development Director, at 509-947-3428.
