West Valley knocks off 3-time 4A volleyball champ Bellarmine Prep
There will be no four-peat for Bellarmine Prep — the West Valley (Yakima) Rams took care of that Friday night.
West Valley beat the Lions 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the 4A state tournament at Toyota Center.
After splitting the first two sets, West Valley came back to take the third 25-21. The Rams built a 21-17 lead and never looked back.
In the fourth, the Rams trailed 15-10 at one point, but came back to forge a 19-19 tie.
Jillian Berg gave the Rams a 22-19 lead with a string of point from the service line. Megan Finley and Julia Mellander had back-to-back kills for a 24-20 lead. The Lions picked up one point, but a net serve by Addy Woolery ended the match.
The Rams will play Emerald Ridge in today’s semifinals. The Jaguars beat Puyallup 25-21, 25-23, 25-16.
Bellarmine Prep had leads of 15-10 and 19-15 in the first set, only to see the Rams rally behind the serving of Berg and Finley. Finley strung together three aces for a 24-22 lead before a net serve.
The Rams got set point with a kill by Parker Webb for a 25-23 victory.
In the second, the teams traded the lead until 17-17. From there, the Lions took a 21-18 lead behind the serving of Claire McCarthy. Leading 24-19, the Lions picked up the win when West Valley’s Erica Meyer put her serve into the net.
Mellander led the Rams with 23 kills, while Meyer had 58 assists.
Hannah Pukis had 25 assists and five blocks for the Lions, while Megan Jacobson had 14 kills and five blocks.
Curtis improved to 27-1 with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-23 win over Mead in the quarterfinals. The Vikings will play Battle Ground, which knocked off previously undefeated Monroe, in the semifinals.
