When there are only 16 teams left playing, everyone is good, and every mistake is costly.

The Kamiakin Braves’ stay at the Class 3A state volleyball tournament in Kennewick was cut short Friday with losses to Mercer Island and Auburn Mountainview.

While the Islanders sent the Braves (15-10) to the consolation side of the bracket, the Lions eliminated Kamiakin with a 25-18, 25-18, 17-25, 25-19 victory in the consolation quarterfinals at Toyota Center.

“You can’t fall behind a tough team,” Kamiakin coach Morgan Schauble said. “It’s crucial to play one point at a time. Here, you have the best 16 teams in the state, you have to be ready for the next play. We needed to control our passes so we could run our hitting in the front row.”

Auburn Mountainview advanced to today’s consolation semifinals against Ferndale, which topped Prairie 3-1.

“We just have to keep the momentum going and fight for every point,” said Lions coach Telia Peterson, whose team is in search of the program’s second state trophy. “We have made nine (state) appearances, and they want to push for that trophy.”

After the Braves forged a 15-all tie in the first set, Auburn Mountainview took an 18-16 lead before reeling off six consecutive points.

The Lions finished the set with a block of Kamiakin’s Madison Judy.

The Braves were right in the thick of things in the second, using a block by Leanna Shymanski to tie the set at 14-all.

Lauren Friis put five points on the board for a 20-14 Lions lead. Kamiakin was able to scrounge up four more points, but again, it fell short.

The Braves took control of the third set to the tune of a 7-3 lead, but the Lions were relentless, tying the set four times before Kamiakin’s Carlee Rowell dished up seven consecutive points for a 24-17 lead. A kill by Judy gave the Braves the win.

“We knew they would make a run,” Peterson said.

Facing a must-win situation in the fourth set, the Braves held small leads until the Lions tied the set at 10. From there, Auburn Mountainview took control with Kiley Lewis and Ali Davenport doing the majority of the damage at the net.

“We knew going in they would be tough hitters and we’d have to deal with it,” Schauble said. “The girls leave here today with their heads held high. They gave it their all.”

Allison Stapleton led the Braves with 13 kills, while Shymanski had nine kills and nine blocks, Judy eight kills and Kennedy Sarver 29 assists.

Lewis, who has committed to play for Boise State, had a match-high 27 kills. Davenport, who is headed to Western Washington, had 14 kills.
