Stanfield drops Oregon 2A semifinal
Stanfield’s run to the Oregon 2A state football finals ended in Hillsboro on Saturday when Kennedy beat the Tigers 34-20 in a semifinal.
Kennedy had three 100-yard rushers, including quarterback Brett Traeger, who hit Bishop Mitchell for a 36-yard TD pass late in the second quarter to give his team the lead for good.
Stanfield tried to keep pace when Tyler Monkus — who rushed for 86 yards — scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter to cut the Kennedy lead to 21-20.
But that was as close as the Tigers could get. Stanfield’s final offensive possessions netted a fumble, two interceptions, a punt and a turnover on downs.
Besides his rushing yards, Monkus also had seven catches for 100 yards. Jarred Warren led the Tigers defensively with 10 tackles.
Kennedy will play Heppner, a 26-3 winner Saturday over Regis, for the state title next weekend.
