State football quarterfinals set
If you’re a high school football fan, the scheduling powers-that-be aren’t your friends this weekend.
You’re going to have to make some tough decisions, especially if you don’t hold any allegiance to certain schools.
Almost all of the Mid-Columbia’s remaining playoff teams are playing at 1 p.m. Saturday in the state quarterfinals.
The Richland Bombers will play their Class 4A quarterfinal against an old Big Nine Conference rival.
The Bombers, coming off a 30-3 win over Central Valley last Friday, play at Lions Field at 1 p.m. Saturday against the Moses Lake Chiefs. Moses Lake, this year’s Big Nine champ, beat Bellarmine Prep 28-27 last Saturday in the first round.
The Richland-Moses Lake winner will be the host team for the state semifinals Nov. 27-28 against the winner of Saturday’s Woodinville-Gonzaga Prep contest.
In Class 3A, Kennewick will travel to play Lakes at 1 p.m. Saturday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
The Lions are coming off a 20-13 win last Saturday over Wilson of Tacoma. Earlier that day, Lakes came to Lampson Stadium in Kennewick and eliminated Kamiakin 53-34.
The Kennewick-Lakes winner would be the host team for the semifinals Nov. 27-28 and would play Bonney Lake or defending state champion Eastside Catholic of Sammamish.
In Class 2A, Prosser takes on Ellensburg at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima. It’s a rematch between the two Central Washington Athletic Conference powers, who played last month in Ellensburg.
The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter to tie the score and force overtime. Ellensburg then won 27-26 when Prosser tried to go for the 2-point conversion in OT and failed to score.
The Mustangs-Bulldogs winner will be the host team for the state semifinals Nov. 27-28 against Saturday’s Sedro-Woolley/Hockinson winner. Ellensburg eliminated Prosser 34-20 in the quarterfinals last year in Moses Lake.
At 3 p.m. Saturday at Lampson Stadium, Connell will take on Zillah in a Class 1A quarterfinal. It’s a rematch of their Oct. 30 nonleague showdown in which visiting Connell won 31-28.
The Zillah-Connell winner will take on the winner of Friday night’s 1A quarterfinal between Royal and Colville — set for 6 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane — in a semifinal Nov. 27 or 28.
The Mid-Columbia also has two 1B teams in the quarterfinals.
Top-ranked Liberty Christian of Richland will host Republic at 1 p.m. Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.
The winner takes on the Touchet vs. Almira/Coulee-Hartline quarterfinal winner (game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at Lions Field in Moses Lake) in the 1B semifinals, set for Nov. 27-28.
And in Oregon, Stanfield will take on Kennedy of Mt. Angel at 5 p.m. Saturday at Liberty High School in Hillsboro in a Class 2A state semifinal contest.
