No. 3 Connell tops No. 2 Zillah 31-28

The third-ranked Connell Eagles have won their last four football games but still have a Week 3 loss to top-ranked Royal stuck in their craw.

What helped to ease that nagging memory was Friday’s 31-28 road win over second-ranked Zillah, a win the Eagles didn’t necessarily need but certainly doesn’t hurt to have under their belt.

Jose Fraga’s 37-yard field goal to give Connall a 17-7 lead at the end the first half might have seemed insignificant at the time, but it proved to be the winning margin after the Leopards staged a second-half comeback that pulled them to within three points.

Brian Hawkins ran for a 29-yard touchdown and hit Dallas Rodriguez for a 3-yard scoring pass to open up a 14-0 second quarter lead. Kameron Benson returned an interception 37-yards for a touchdown to make it 24-7 before Zillah scored three of the final four touchdowns of the game — two of them on Trey Delp scoring strikes to Isaac Suarez.

Eagles running back Jaxs Whitby finished with 101 yards on 12 carries, getting most of them on a 62-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
