Mid-Columbia roundup for Oct. 9: Southridge earns first conference win of year

The Southridge Suns used some stellar defense to earn their first Mid-Columbia Conference football victory of the season Friday night, beating Walla Walla 17-7 at Borleske Stadium.

Leading 10-7 with 1:10 to play, the Suns had to stop Wa-Hi, which had the ball at its own 10-yard line.

Blue Devils quarterback Mitch Lesmeister moved the ball up to his own 31 in two plays. But on the next play, Southridge’s Derrick Gillespie picked off Lesmeister’s pass and ran it back for a 47-yard touchdown, giving the Suns a 17-7 lead with 30 seconds to play.

Lesmeister had given Wa-Hi an early 7-0 lead on a 62-yard TD run.

But Southridge responded with a 1-yard TD run by Zayid Al-Ghani, who finished the game with 185 rushing yards on 33 carries.

Suns kicker Hunter Spiva gave his team the lead for good in the third quarter when he kicked a 21-yard field goal.

Samuel Kori added 50 rushing yards for the Suns.
