Kamiakin uses second-half surge to down Chiawana 35-7

Chalk this one up to 2015 technology — being able to watch film of the first half, which saw both teams struggle offensively to a scoreless tie.

Kamiakin came out after halftime and scored 28 third-quarter points and rolled to a 35-7 victory over Chiawana in a Mid-Columbia Conference contest Friday night at Lampson Stadium.

Whatever was said at halftine the Braves took it to heart.

“Offensively, we were timid,” Kamiakin’s Austin Crawford said. “We needed to get the harmony working in the second half. The defensie played well the whole game.”

After a scoreless first half, on their second offensive snap of the second half, Kamiakin’s Zach Borisch cionnected with Gavin Crow on a post over the middle and Crow caught the ball in stride and split the Riverhawk safties for a 69-yard touchdown.

Chiawana moved the ball to the Kamiakin 31 on its next possession but four straight incompletions turned the ball back over the the Braves.

From there Jethro Questad took over. Three Questad runs netted 35 yards and the fourth was 34 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 Kamiakin lead. Questad finished with 17 carries for 80 yards for the Braves.

After the Riverhawks went three and out on its next possession, it took Kamiakin just 39 seconds to score again when Borisch hit Logan Smith for a 9-yard touchdown and the Braves were cruising.

The final score of the quarter took just one play as Crow raced 48 yards on Kamiakin’s first offensive snap on its next possession.

“It wasn’t a matter of adjustments,” Kamiakin coach Scott Biglin said about what the Braves did differently in the third quarter. “We looked at the film and they were kicking our butts. (Offensive line coach Gilbert) Marquez challenged them and they came out and executed.”

Kamiakin hade it 35-0 three plays into the fourth quarter when Borisch connected with Isaiah Brimmer on a 36-yard streak down the far side.

Reserves finished off the rest for Kamiakin, which is how Chiawana’s lone score came came late in the game when Andrew Vargas ripped off a 48-yard gian and finished it off with a 1 yard scoring run after that run.

Vargas finished with 113 yards on 28 carries.

Kamiakin stays unbeaten in Mid-Columbia Conference play at 3-0. Chiawana falls to 1-2 on MCC play.
