Prep football follow-up: Kamiakin beats Kennewick 27-13 in hard-fought MCC rivalry game

If anyone thought the Kennewick vs. Kamiakin rivalry game lost any of its luster when Southridge joined the conference and the Big 9 was turned into the Mid-Columbia Conference, they weren’t in attendance Friday night at Lampson Stadium.

The Braves scored two second half touchdowns to pull away from the Lions 27-13 in a hard-hitting physical game that left many players limping off the field.

“it was a physical game,” Kamiakin quarterback Zach Borisch said following, sporting a slight limp.

Kamiakin coach Sciott Biglin echoed Borisch’s sentiments. “ It was real physical,” he said. “When you play Kennewick that’s the kind of battle you expect. Anytime you play Kennewick , we’re fighting for a playoff spot and seeding.”

Kennewick coach Bill Templeton said, “We’re a physical team. They made some plays after we tied it up. (Kamiakin) is a good team, but I love the effort out of all our kids.”

Kamiakin jumped to an early 6-0 lead in on its first possession when Borisch hit Jace Navejas over the middle and the 5-foot-9, 155-pound senior continued across the field and was able to turn it up for the touchdown. The extra point was no good.,

Kennewick got the ball on its own 11 yard line midway though the first quarter when Mugtaba Kori intercepted a Dylan Plew overthrow and returned it down to the one-yard line. Kennewick bowed its back and stopped the Braves on three straight running plays before Borisch was able to plunge in for the seore, making it 13-0 and it looked as though Kamiakin could cruise.

But two missed field goals on the Braves’ next two possessions gave the Lions life. Kennewick cut the lead to 13-7 just before half when Isaac Ruiz scampered in from 19 yards out. Ruiz ran for 67 yards on the drive on six carries as he found daylight off right tackle.

Kamiakin when three and out on the first possession of the second half and Kennewick immediately answered with a 11-play drive and consumed 5:18 off the clock and tied the score 13-13 when Plew hit Devyn Edward in the back of the endzone.

It took Kamiakin just 47 seconds to retake the lead when Jethro Questad broke free up the right side and raced 57 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

“Jethro is just a stud,” Borisch said. “Give the offensive line credit too. They were outmanned all game, and they just kept fighting.”

Kennewick never really threatened again and Kamiakin added insurance in the fourth quarter when Gavin Crow took a misdirection handoff and raced 11 yards for the touchdown.

Kamiakin raised to 3-1, 2-0 in MCC play while Kennewick falls to 2-2, 1-1.
