Prep football follow-up: Kiona-Benton tops Columbia-Burbank in high-scoring SCAC East showdown

We still can’t be sure about what Bears do in the woods, but now we know what they do after a defeat.

A week after its first loss of the season, Kiona-Benton kept the points coming Friday night, posting one of the highest point totals in school history with a 67-32 road win over Columbia-Burbank.

Bears running back Jacob Trujillo ran 26 times for 256 yards and four touchdowns, and Vladimir Rizin returned two punts for touchdowns to spark Ki-Be to its first SCAC East win.

“We started fast, recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff. The next play, Trujillo scored on a 24-yard run,” Bears coach Darren Mezger said. “Offensively, whenever we touched the ball in the first half, we scored. Our goal (in the second half) was to get five (defensive) stops, and that would seal the deal. The whole third quarter, our defense was getting stops.”

The Coyotes, who were also coming off their first loss after starting the season 2-0, dropped their second consecutive game despite scoring 26 points in the first half.

“We made too many errors and couldn’t tackle,” Burbank coach Zeke Fife said. “(Ki-Be) is a lot bigger and more athletic than they were last year. They must have hit the weights.”

A.J. Dixon led the Coyotes on offense, catching five passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Royal 55, Cashmere 6: The top-ranked Knights kept rolling, building a 41-0 lead before allowing a third-quarter score in a nonleague road win over the Bulldogs.

Royal quarterback Kaden Jenks threw four touchdown passes to four receivers — one of them an 84-yard strike to Jose Ponce — and ran for another.

“We didn’t have a lot of offensive plays. We kind of spread it around,” Knights coach Wiley Allred said. “We’re just trying to keep everything going in the right direction.”

Warden 64, River View 6: Cougars running back Zack Haskins ran for 212 yards and four touchdowns, and Wade Visker returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown as Warden dealt the visiting Panthers a harrowing nonleague defeat.

“River View always gives us trouble, so this was a great overall win for us,” Cougars coach Robert Arredondo said. “The offensive line did a great job, and (quarterback) Tanner Skone did very well controlling the ball and making his passes.”

Warden led 28-6 after one quarter and 50-6 at halftime.

Cheney 28, Sunnyside 20: The Grizzlies suffered their first loss of the season, putting an end to their best start since 1982, as the Blackhawks overcame a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to record the nonleague home win.

Fernando Cid-Reyes scored on a 20-yard run to put Sunnyside on the board first at 7-0. Nico Valle capped another scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, and it looked as though the Grizzlies might have themselves an easy road victory.

But Cheney punched in a late first-quarter score to cut the lead to 14-7 and outscored Sunnyside 21-7 over the final three quarters to record the win.

Ty Graham rushed for 209 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Blackhawks on offense.
