Prep football follow: Top-ranked Royal takes down No. 4 Connell
Kaden Jenks hit Sam Christensen for a key fourth-down conversion for the Royal Knights late in the fourth quarter to keep their final scoring drive alive and then intercepted a pass on Connell’s final drive to preserve top-ranked Royal’s 27-20 SCAC East win over the visiting Eagles on Friday night in Royal City.
A critical pass interference penalty on Connell also put the Knights closer to a score on their final drive. Joe Lang ran the ball in from 1-yard out to give Royal a 25-20 lead before Sawyer Stakkeland ran in the 2-point conversion to put the Knights in front for the last time.
“It was a great game between two powerhouses duking it out,” Eagles coach Wayne Riner said. “Sometimes a loss is good for you. These kids didn’t know where we were at for the last two games (blowout wins over Othello and Cashmere), but now we know a lot more about our teams.”
Christensen caught just two passes for 87 yards, but they were both for touchdowns.
“It felt like we might pull away (in the second quarter), but they kind of turned the tables on us in the third,” Royal coach Wiley Allred said. “We were actually pretty frustrated with our mistakes, and they caused a lot of them.”
