The Sunnyside Grizzlies, after going 0-10 last year, are starting out the 2015 season like gangbusters.

The Grizzlies held off a gallant Pasco Bulldogs football team, winning a nonleague contest 27-20 on Thursday night at Edgar Brown Stadium.

The Grizzlies, who beat Grandview last week 26-6, are now 2-0.

Pasco, which was in this game until the final minutes, drops to 0-2 under new head coach Kevin Jolley.

The Bulldogs never led in the contest, but they rallied twice to tie the game.

Pasco’s Deondre Hendrix pounded the ball in on an 8-yard touchdown run with 7:23 to play, tying the game at 20-20.

But the Grizzlies, behind the rushing of Isaac Palomino and Jaime Alvarez, responded with a 10-play, 71-yard scoring drive. It culminated in Lorenzo Sanchez’s 17-yard end sweep as he went untouched into the end zone.

That gave Sunnyside a 27-20 lead with 3:52 to play, and the Grizzlies sealed the deal on the ensuing kickoff, as Pasco fumbled the return and the Grizzlies’ Rudy Minieta recovered it.

Pasco’s offense could not get past midfield after that.

Big numbers

Sunnyside running back Palomino finished with 160 yards rushing on 30 carries, and he scored one touchdown. ... Grizzlies QB Nico Valle had 155 yards passing. Receiver Anthony Herrera caught 8 passes for 90 yards. ... Pasco fullback Deondre Hendrix looked strong carrying the ball up the middle, finishing with 96 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Big plays and players

Pasco defensive lineman Misael Estrada stripped Sunnyside quarterback Nico Valle of the football at the 4, then recovered the ball himself in the second quarter. That turned a potential 14-0 Sunnyside lead into an eventual 7-7 halftime tie. ... Pasco linebacker Kynen Tate was in on at least nine tackles, and he had one pass breakup. ... Pasco sophomore Tayden Jenkins returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.

Grizzly notes

Pasco opens Mid-Columbia Conference play next Friday with a home game against Hanford. ... Sunnyside plays host to North Central next Friday in another nonleague game.
