Perez, Stayrook power Southridge past Wenatchee
Mason Perez threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns Friday night to lead Southridge to a 24-21 victory over Wenatchee at the Apple Bowl.
Perez hit Eric Stayrook for scoring passes of 37 and 59 yards, and connected with Peyton Monson early in the fourth quarter for a 23-yard touchdown and a 24-7 lead.
“It was nice to come out of Wenatchee with the win,” first-year Southridge coach Aaron Sonnichsen said. “Mason started off a little slow, I think he was pressing a bit and was trying to do everything right. He settled down and got in a groove. He’s a really smart quarterback, he just needs to trust his mechanics. Once we started clicking, it was fun to watch.”
The host Panthers would not roll over for the Suns, scoring twice in a span of three minutes to pull within 24-21 with 5:16 to play.
“Wenatchee seemed tired and we took the foot off the pedal a bit,” Sonnichsen said. “They regrouped and came back a little bit. Our defense played really well. We are taking the bend but don’t break mentality. Their quarterback was on the run and we pressured him a bit.”
Stayrook finished with four catches for 132 yards and had three quarterback sacks.
Hayden Brimberry had nine carries for 27 yards and a touchdown for the Suns, which overcame two lost fumbles and 98 yards in penalties.
The Suns will host Sunnyside on Friday at Lampson Stadium.
