Let’s play 2: Football doubleheaders coming to Lampson this fall
Change is coming for the Mid-Columbia Conference football schedule, and the result will be some busy Friday nights in Kennewick this fall.
Lampson Stadium — the home field for Southridge, Kennewick and Kamiakin High Schools — will host three Friday night varsity doubleheaders during the regular season. The twin-bill format will replace the Thursday/Friday split that used to occur when two Kennewick schools hosted games in the same week.
The first half of the doubleheaders will kick off at 5 p.m., with the nightcaps scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
A list of the nights that will feature double-barrel action on the Lampson turf:
SEPT. 8 (WEEK 2): Kamiakin vs. Lewis and Clark at 5 p.m.; Southridge vs. Sunnyside at 8 p.m.
SEPT. 22 (WEEK 4): Southridge vs. Richland at 5 p.m.; Kennewick vs. Walla Walla at 8 p.m.
OCT. 6: (WEEK 6): Kennewick vs. Hanford at 5 p.m.; Southridge vs. Chiawana at 8 p.m.
The one Thursday night contest scheduled at Lampson is the Southridge-Kamiakin game at 7 p.m. Oct. 26, the ninth and final regular season game for both teams. Kennewick will host Pasco at 7 p.m. the following night.
This season will serve as a trial period for Friday night doubleheaders, Southridge athletic director Tim Wood said, as administrators and teams will evaluate their effectiveness for future years. Wood said he anticipates some traffic congestion in the Lampson Stadium parking lot between games, but otherwise expects things to go smoothly.
