Richland’s Sorn, Kamiakin’s Toure headline All-MCC hoops squads

There’s little debate to be had over this year’s Mid-Columbia Conference basketball players of the year.

Richland High School’s 7-foot-3 senior center Riley Sorn averaged 16 points, nine rebounds and nearly four blocks per game this season, and was named the All-MCC Boys Player of the Year on Thursday, also picking up his second straight Defensive Player of the Year nod.

Kamiakin junior Oumou Toure led the league by averaging 25.7 points per game during the regular season, and last week became the school’s all-time leading scorer — with a season still to go in her high school career — when she passed 1,570 career points in last week’s district semifinal win over North Central. She earned her second All-Conference Player of the Year nod.

Earl Streufert (coach of the 22-0 Richland boys) earned his fifth coach of the year award, and Steve Davis (who coaches the co-MCC-champion Chiawana girls) was named girls coach of the year for the fourth time. Chiawana sophomore guard Alyssa Agundis was named the girls Defensive Player of the Year.

Sorn is joined on the All-Area first team by teammates Cole Northrop and Garrett Streufert — both juniors. Already guaranteed a spot at the Tacoma Dome, the Bombers will take on undefeated GSL champion Gonzaga Prep at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the District 8 championship at the Spokane Arena.

Joined by fellow All-MCC first-teamer Alexa Hazel, Toure’s co-MCC-champion Braves (19-2) tried to defend their 3A district title against Mt. Spokane on Thursday at the Spokane Arena, followed by the Kamiakin boys, who were also playing Mt. Spokane.
