Bombers fifth in 4A state swim and dive team standings

The Richland Bombers didn’t repeat as Class 4A state swim and dive team champions Saturday night, but there was a title in the mix.

Senior diver Kelsea Hinkley won with a score of 421.70, topping district rivals Ali Brandt of Wenatchee and Ali Pierce of Eastmont.

Richland sophomore Claire Schaef was third in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle to help the Bombers finish fifth in the team standings.

Skyline won the title with 293 points, while Richland had 130.

The Bombers took seventh in the 200 free relay, eighth in the 200 medley and 10th in the 400 free. They also got points from seniors Kelsey Olsen (12th, diving), Lauren Hall (12th, 100 butterfly) and Alyssa Musick (13th, 100 fly), and junior Katie Schroder (13th, 100 breaststroke).

Lakeside of Seattle (3A) and Liberty of Renton (2A) repeated as team champions.

Schaef finished behind freshmen Yulia Groysman (Newport) and Sarah DiMeco (Skyline) in each of her races. Schaef had a time of 1 minute, 55.09 seconds in the 200 free and a 5:05.95 in the 500.

Walla Walla sophomore Paige Gardner took seventh in the 100 free (53.78).

In the 3A meet, the top six teams — Lakeside, Mercer Island, Bainbridge, Bellevue, Garfield and Roosevelt — finished in the same order as last year. Hanford was 18th, led by senior diver Amanda Andersen’s 10th-place finish and consolation points from all three relays.

Kamiakin’s Saige Polanik took fifth in her final state dive meet with a score of 340.45. Andersen — Hinkley’s cousin — finished with 292.15 points.

Polanik rose six spots from last year, while Andersen jumped up seven. Lakeside junior Amber Chong won with a total of 413.45.

Kennewick swimmer Alexis Murphy, who joined older sister Hailey as a four-year individual state qualifier for the Lions, finished 11th in the 100 breast (1:09.21) and 15th in the 100 fly (1:00.73).

Kamiakin junior Madison Thurber was 12th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.46, three-tenths of a second ahead of Hanford sophomore Megan Gelston and Bainbridge freshman Shea Schardein, who tied for 13th.

Hanford sophomore Maddie Elliott was 16th in the breast (1:11.09).

In the relays, Hanford took 11th in the 200 free (1:45.09), 12th in the 200 medley (1:57.49) and 16th (3:51.41) in the 400 free.

In the 2A finals, Prosser’s 400 free relay finished 16th (4:17.86) for the Mustangs’ only points of the meet.
