Chiawana High makes history with its first WA 4A soccer semifinals run

For the first time in school history, the Chiawana boys soccer team has advanced to the state 4A semifinals.

The No. 3-seeded Riverhawks defeated No. 6 Newport of Bellevue 2-1 last Saturday in the state quarterfinals.

Junior midfielder Xabier Echazarra scored the game-winning goal with 5 minutes remaining to give Chiawana a 2-1 lead.

Newport scored the game’s first goal 12 minutes into the half. Late in the first half, Riverhawks junior midfielder Callum Laird even the score at 1-1 with a goal.

Now, Chiawana (19-1-1) meets No. 2 seed Woodinville (18-2) at 4:30 p.m. this Friday in the first 4A semifinal of the day at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

The other semifinal pits No. 5 Hazel (20-1-1) against No. 8 Wenatchee (14-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

The semifinal winners will meet Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. The losers play for third place at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

The Riverhawks had made it to the state quarterfinals two other times before this season: 2011 and 2024.

Chiawana won its first-round state match on May 21, beating No. 14 Bothell 3-1.

▪ No. 10 seed Pasco lost in the 4A first round, falling 3-1 at No. 7-seeded Union in Vancouver. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 16-6 record.

CLASS 3A: Kennewick went 1-1 in the tournament.

The Lions were the last seed to get into the 20-team tournament. But they defeated No. 13 Bellarmine Prep 2-1 in a first-round match on May 20.

In the second round, the Lions lost 6-3 to No. 4 Bishop Blanchet on May 23.

Kennewick finished the season with a 14-7 record.

CLASS 2A: No. 6 Othello made it to the state quarterfinals, as the Huskies beat No. 11 Franklin Pierce 5-0 in the first round on May 20.

But in last Saturday’s quarterfinal, Othello lost 3-2 to No. 3 Columbia River.

The Huskies ended the season with a 14-6-1 record.

Meanwhile, No. 8 Grandview was eliminated in the first round, losing to No. 9 R.A. Long of Longview 2-0 on May 21.

The Greyhounds finished the season with an 11-6-1 record.

CLASS 1A: Our region’s three teams were eliminated from state tournament play last weekend.

No. 8 Wahluke edged No. 9 Seton Catholic 1-0 in a second-round match last Friday. In the quarterfinals, the Warriors fell to top seed University Prep 6-1 on Saturday.

Wahluke ended its season with an 18-4 record

No. 6 Royal dropped its second-round match, falling 2-1 to No. 11 Kings on May 23. The Knights finish with a record of 16-4.

Connell, ranked 17th, took down No. 16 Brewster 5-1 in an opening-round match on May 20.

The Eagles then lost 2-1 to top seed University Prep in the second round on May 23. Connell’s final record was 15-6.
