159 Mid-Columbia athletes and 35 relay teams head to WA state track finals

The Mid-Columbia region sent 159 athletes and 35 relay teams to sites in Tacoma and Yakima as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s state high school track and field meets which kicked off Thursday night and run through Saturday.

Mount Tahoma High School plays host to the large schools — Class 4A, 3A and 2A.

The smaller schools — 1B, 2B and 1A — will congregate at Eisenhower High School’s Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

Below is a look at each state meet, as well as each area athlete competing and what their events are.

4A boys

One thing the Mid-Columbia Conference boys have plenty of is speed.

Normally, District 6 — which comprises the 4A teams in the MCC and Greater Spokane League — gets two state berths in the 100 meters.

But so many athletes in the MCC are going to the state meet based on qualifying through the minimum state standard. How many? Try six MCC boys in the 100 meters.

They are Kamiakin’s JaRae Long (who has the fastest time heading into the meet at 10.62 seconds) and Mason Severson; Richland’s Bradley Kraus, Stryker Luther and Levi Stiver; and Chiawana’s Gabriel Barajas and Tristan Breier.

Meanwhile, Kamiakin’s Devin Crews should do some damage in both hurdles events; while teammate Ezra Teeples leads all 4A 1600 runners coming in.

Chiawana has the 4A state’s fastest 4x400 unit, while Kamiakin is second. Chiawana’s Braxton Feldmann should be a favorite in the javelin, while Hanford freshman Jonathan Allen is coming along as a pole vaulter.

4A girls

Look for Kamiakin’s Aubrey Herrin and Richland’s Naly Khamlue-Pratt to do some damage.

Herrin, headed to the University of Portland to play basketball, is the state leader in the high jump at 5-9. She is a viable candidate to also win gold in both the long jump and triple jump

Khamlue-Pratt gets better every week and will battle for state titles in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as running in the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

Chiawana’s 4x400 relay team is one of the state’s best.

Hanford’s Landry Allen is headed to the University of Illinois as a pole vaulter; and Richland’s Mackenzie Schulz is the state 4A leader in the shot put.

The Falcons have four athletes competing in the pole vault, while Kamiakin has three high jumpers.
