Tri-Cities area athletes from smaller schools head to WA state tournaments

State track tournaments are wrapping up, with some of the smaller Mid-Columbia high schools set to put on impressive displays. Here’s the list of where the 1A/B and 2A/B Tri-Cities area schools are expected to show out.

1A boys track

Connell senior Carson Riner will be the guy to watch at Eastern Washington University this week.

Riner should be the favorite in both the long jump and the javelin.

What is it about the Riner family and javelin throwing? Older sister Ashton, who competes at BYU, is the top college women’s javelin thrower in the nation. Carson’s younger brother, Kellen Riner, will also be a contender in the javelin.

Other area contenders include Connell’s Chase Nielson in the long jump, the Connell 4x100 relay team, Cade Clyde of Connell in the shot put, and Wahluke’s Brayan Calvario in the high jump.

Here are the other area competitors, all considered darkhorses:

COLLEGE PLACE: College Place 4x400 relay, Joshua Courtney (800, 1600, 3200), Eli Durand (110 hurdles), Jio Herrera (1600), Jose Martinez (shot put).

CONNELL: Connell 4x400 relay, Jackson Forsyth (discus, shot put), Jacob Freeman (400), Nielson (triple jump).

KIONA-BENTON: Seih Jackson (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles).

WAHLUKE: Angel Vazquez-Jimenez (3200).

1A girls track

College Place’s Mya Adams looks to have a great shot at medaling in the long jump.

The rest of the area’s 1A athletes could possibly do so too.

Here’s a look at our region’s competitors:

COLLEGE PLACE: Adams (high jump), College Place 4x400 relay, Emma Darnold (100 hurdles), Lauren Green (300 hurdles), Morgan Hafen (javelin), Lillian White (discus).

CONNELL: Connell 4x200 relay, 4x400 relay; Brandy Ferguson (100 hurdles), Madalyn Jenks (400, 800), Persia Poulton (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Adrianna Powers (discus), Emily Vanburen (400).

ROYAL: Ivy Delay (100, 200), Samantha Fitzhugh (long jump, pole vault), Briana Guerrero (200), Jessi Phillips (javelin), Royal 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay.

WAHLUKE: Wahluke 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay.

2B boys track

River View’s Cody Bush has the best shot at winning a title this week, as he’s considered a contender in the long jump.

Here are the rest of this region’s contenders:

COLUMBIA-BURBANK: Travis Sloan (discus).

MABTON: Samuel Vazquez (shot put).

RIVER VIEW: Anthuan Beltran (200), Cody Brown (110 hurdles, discus, high jump), Bush (triple jump), Austin Eckhart (300 hurdles), Jackson Kolasinski (shot put), River View 4x100 relay

WALLA WALLA VALLEY ACADEMY: Travis Lyford (400), Gonzi Schimpf (javelin).

2B girls track

Two area athletes — Lind-Ritzville’s Sydney Kinch (long jump) and River View’s Skyln Munson (javelin) — are considered favorites in this week’s state meet at EWU.

Kinch is also a contender in the pole vault. Other contenders include River View’s Aliyah Malone in the high jump, Lind-Ritzville’s Myra Miller in the discus, River View’s 4x100 relay team, Columbia-Burbank’s Alyssa Stanley in the javelin, and WWVA’s Makiah Stepper in the triple jump.

Here are the rest of the region’s competitors:

COLUMBIA-BURBANK: C-B 4x400 relay, Marlee Paget (300 hurdles), Azlyn Pariera (1600), Stanley (long jump, triple jump), Karsyn Wallace (200, 300 hurdles).

LIND-RITZVILLE: L-R 4x100 relay.

MABTON: Mabton 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay.

RIVER VIEW: Kadyen Anderson (100, 200, 400), Marina Jimenez (100, 200), Munson (800, high jump), RV 4x200 relay.

WWVA: Clara Scully (javelin), Stepper (100 hurdles, long jump).

1B boys track

DeSales’ Jadon Bingham is one of three area athletes in this state meet, and he’s a contender in the javelin. He’ll also competing in the 100 meters.

DeSales’ Levi Bingham will compete in the 800 meters, while Prescott’s Salvador Ayala is in the 110 hurdles.

1B girls track

DeSales has a couple athletes who are considered favorites: Emmalyne Jimenez in 800 and 1600 meters, and Morgan Thomas in the shot put and discus.

Jimenez is also a contender in the 200 meters.

The Irish’ 4x200 relay team also has a chance at a victory.

Here’s the remainder of the DeSales team: DeSales 4x400 relay, Regina Nelson (long jump), Izzie Parker (400), and Heidi Scott (300 hurdles).
