Southridge golfers take 3rd in state. WA tennis matches begin

Jillian Hui placed second and teammate Angela Park finished eighth to help lead the Southridge girls golf team to a third-place finish Wednesday at the 3A state golf tournament at Meadowood Golf Course at Liberty Lake.

Southridge finished with 615 strokes as a team.

Hui went 69-70 for a 139, while Park went 69-77 for a 146. Bellevue’s Bernice Stolte won the tournament, going 73-65 for a 138.

Other top area placers were Hermiston’s Nadalie Cannell (79-80–159) at 25th; and Southridge’s Riley Brandt (83-82–165) and Abby Hodges (81-84–165) both tied for 34th.

4A GIRLS: Jillian Breedlove, of Pasco, finished fourth overall at Hawks Prairie Links Golf Course in Lacey, shooting a 74-72 for a 146 total. Hanford’s Bella McDermott placed 10th with a 75-76–151.

4A BOYS: Richland’s Evan Johnson was the highest area placer at Indian Summer Golf & Country Club in Olympia, scoring a 153 on rounds of 76 and 77. … Chiawana’s Joel Martinez was 18th with 77-78–155. Pasco’s Jackson Cazier finished 23rd at 81-77–158, while Richland’s Davis Sheets placed 34th at 83-78–161. Three other golfers tied for 37th: Richland’s Drew Frei (82-80–162), Richland’s Hunter Grainey (82-80–162), and Kamiakin’s Wyatt Hansen (80-82–162).

1B/2B BOYS: Jack Lesko of DeSales finished 20th at Deer Park Golf Course.

1B/2B GIRLS: Warden took the team title with 22 points, as sisters Jaryn Madsen and Lauren Madsen shot identical 100-101–201 scores at Deer Park Golf Course. Nell Dodds of Walla Walla Valley Academy was the highest placer among locals, taking fifth with a 97-83–180. Columbia-Burbank’s Shayley Larson finished seventh at 90-95–185, while Lind-Ritzville’s Amelia Court finished 13th at 105-100–205.

State tennis

Thirty-two Mid-Columbia athletes will be competing in the numerous state championship tennis tournaments this weekend at various sites around the state — including the Tri-Cities.

The 4A boys and girls tournaments are at the Pacific Clinic in Kennewick and Kamiakin High School; the 3A tournaments are at Claybell Park, Howard Amon Park and the Columbia Basin Racquet Club — all in Richland.

The 2A state tournament are at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle; and the 1A, 1B and 2B players will all be at the Yakima Tennis Center.

Here’s who is playing:

Class 4A — Boys singles: Sonny Bravo, Hanford; Isaac Contreras, Kamiakin; Adam Tan, Hanford.

Boys doubles: Humayl Hashmi-Hayden Jones, Hanford; Isaac Morrison-Matt Morrison, Richland.

Girls singles: Bryan Neal, Richland; Nicole Samaan, Hanford.

Girls doubles: Gracie Bolson-Sydney Smith, Chiawana.

Class 3A — Girls singles: Janie Buckingham, Kennewick.

Girls doubles: Janey Pedersen-Meigan Crowder, Southridge.

Class 2A — Boys singles: Aaron Villarreal, Othello.

Class 1A — Girls singles: Sumi Leavell, College Place; Ellen Wickham, Connell.

Girls doubles: Madi Christensen-Cambelle Anderson, Royal; Mia Ferraro-Grace Casagrande, College Place.

Class 1B/2B/1A — Boys singles: Ezra Beus, Kiana-Benton; Andrew Fierros, Wahluke; Max Urrutia, Wahluke; Dayne Ziegler, Royal.

Boys doubles: Daniel Li-Brandon Naef, Connell; Marcus Morrill-Cameron Price, Connell.

Class 1B/2B — Girls doubles: Amy Anderson-Alexis Melcher, Lind-Ritzville.
