Kamiakin boys finish 20th at Nike Cross Country Nationals
The Kamiakin boys cross country placed 20th in a field of 22 teams at the Nike Cross Country Nationals in Portland.
Top high school runners and teams from eight regions around the country competed. The Portland meet included Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, Montana and Wyoming.
It was the Kamiakin boys third straight year to go to the Nike nationals.
The Braves’ Isaac Teeples was the top Kamiakin placer, coming in at 40th out of the 203 runners competing.
Teeples covered the 5,000-meter course at Glendoveer Golf Course in 15 minutes and 44.5 seconds.
Nico Young of Newbury Park, Calif., won the race with a time of 14:52.3.
Wil Smith of Lewis & Clark of Spokane was the top Washington runner to place, finishing 10th. Smith won the WIAA Class 4A state title last month at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Other Kamiakin runners completing the race were: Grayson Wilcott, finishing 138th at 16:39.1; Stanford Smith, 144th at 16:43.2; Andrew Larson, 156th at 16:46.6; Andrew Holladay, 185th at 17:10.9; and Jax Weide, 196th at 17:23.5.
On the girls’ side, Katelyn Tuohy of New York placed first, completing the 5,000 meters in 17:18.4.
Julia David Smith, from Issaquah and the state 3A champ at Sun Willows, was the top Washington placer at 18th with an 18:02.4.
NAIA women’s soccer
• Eastern Oregon University’s women’s soccer team made it to the NAIA quarterfinals of the national tournament last week, going 3-1 in the tourney and finishing the season with a 16-3-4 record.
The Mountaineers had two Tri-Citians on the team: senior keeper Cydni Cottrell (Chiawana), and freshman defender Mikenna Rasmussen (Southridge).
Cottrell, a first-team All-Cascade Collegiate Conference keeper as a junior in the 2018 season, was named second-team all-conference this season for Eastern.
She started 15 games, surrendering nine goals and making 41 saves for a 0.63 goals-against average. She had five shutouts this season.
Rasmussen came off the bench four times this season, and she scored one goal.
• The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University women’s team from Arizona also made the NAIA tournament, going 1-1.
Two Mid-Columbians played for the Eagles, who finished with a 13-4-4 record: junior midfielder Jennifer Inions (Prosser/Walla Walla CC), and senior midfielder Parker Lee (Kamiakin).
Lee led the Eagles with shots with 88, finishing with 6 goals and not 4 assists.
She was named first-team All-California Pacific Conference.
Inions made nine starts this season, finishing with 2 goals and 2 assists.
College sports update
• Freshman Oumou Toure (Kamiakin) made her first career start Nov. 30 for the Butler University women’s basketball team, grabbing a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 60-55 victory over Ohio University.
• Junior Alexa Clark (Kamiakin) averaged 74.7 strokes over nine rounds this fall for the Eastern Washington University women’s golf team.
• Grace Hipke (Richland) made 22 starts as a midfielder for the Peninsula Community College women’s soccer team, which went 21-1 this season. Hipke scored 1 goal and 1 assist. Her goal was a game-winner.
• Sophomore defender Brianna Bueck (Walla Walla) started nine women’s soccer games this season for the 11-5-3 Yaks, scoring one goal.
• Sophomore Alex Anteau (Hermiston) was second on the Blue Mountain Community College women’s soccer team with 11 shots this season. BMCC had a 1-14-1 record.
• Danielle Chang (Hawaii) was the leading scorer for the CBC women’s soccer team (15-2-4) this season, scoring 24 points (7 goals, 10 assists). Rebecca Wheeler (Hawaii) led the Hawks with 9 goals, while Cassidie Andrews (Centennial-Portland) added 7 goals.
• Luis Rodriguez (Royal) was second in scoring for the Wenatchee Valley CC men’s soccer team this season, scoring 6 goals and 2 assists.
• Western Washington University’s Tracy Melville (Lind-Ritzville) finished 10th at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s cross country championships. Melville covered the 6K course in 22 minutes, 40.0 seconds.
All-conference teams
Sunnyside senior Mike Rivera was named the co-MVP, along with Wenatchee senior Nathan Baluman, for the Columbia Basin Big Nine Conference all-conference football teams.
Other major award-winners are Wenatchee senior Chase Loidhamer as Lineman of the Year; Wenatchee’s Scott Devereaux as Coach of the Year; Eastmont as the Offensive Line of the Year; and Wenatchee as Defensive Line of the Year.
On the offensive unit, Eisenhower receiver Malachi Spurrier was named MVP; on defense Eastmont senior DB Wesley McIlwaine and West Valley senior DB Jack Van De Brake were co-MVPs.
The Grizzlies’ Rivera was a two-way first-team all-star, both at wide receiver and defensive back.
Other Sunnyside players to make the all-conference team are: senior Miguel Ayala, honorable mention OL; senior Ever Diddens-Maldonado, first-team offensive lineman; senior Arturo Fernandez, second-team RB; senior Alex Mojica, second-team OL; sophomore Myles Newhouse, second-team LB; Junior Favian Osguera, honorable mention LB; sophomore Raymond Ramierez, honorable mention LB; senior Adam Sanchez, first-team LB; senior Jonny Sanchez, second-team WR and honorable mention DB; junior DB Julian Sandoval, second-team; senior Jaden Siller, second-team OL; and junior Ethan Weron, honorable mention OL.
• Othello had five players named to the CWAC girls soccer all-conference team this fall.
Sophomores Hailee Guzman (at forward) and Janelly Verduzco (midfielder) were both name to the second team.
Senior midfielder Emily Mendez, junior forward Gracie Sorenson, and sophomore defender Ashley Perez were honorable mention selections.
Prosser had two honorable mention picks: sophomore forward Leila Taylor and senior midfielder Hayley Van Winkle.
Grandview junior defender Emily Rojas was a second-team selection.
Selah’s Isabelle Moultray was named CWAC Offensive Player of the Year, while Ellensburg’s Allie Brown was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Selah’s Todd Martin was named Coach of the Year, and East Valley, Grandview and Wapato shared the Sportsmanship Award.
