Samantha Hui has been one of the top golfers in the Mid-Columbia Conference since her freshman year at Southridge High School.

Thursday, she was rewarded for her efforts, signing a letter of intent to golf for the University of Wyoming. Her scholarship will cover a majority of her tuition, books and room and board.

“The thing about their program is they have really cold weather, but they have a really nice indoor practice facility,” Hui said. “They also go out of state to practice, so I won’t be in the cold weather 100 percent of the time.”

Wyoming broke ground on its $1.2 million state-of-the-art facility in 2012. It has four 8-foot-wide hitting bays and more than 1,800 square feet of indoor putting greens.

Hui said former Wyoming player Jason Aichele, now a pro at Meadow Springs Country Club, helped open the lines of communication with the Cowgirls program.

“He helped me get in the door,” Hui said. “I had an offer from Eastern Washington, and I was looking at them quite intensely, but Wyoming was a better fit for me.”

Hui has had a very impressive high school career, placing in the top 10 at the Class 3A state tournament the past three years.

She was fourth as a freshman, eighth as a sophomore, helping the Suns win the team title, and she was third her junior year at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.

Hui will be the third Mid-Columbia player to join the Wyoming roster in recent years. Richland’s Drew McCullough (senior) and Carl Underwood (freshman) are on the men’s team.

“I don’t really know Carl, but I’m excited to be on a team with him,” Hui said.
