State golf: Southridge girls win 3A team title

Despite its No. 1 and 2 overall scorers shooting 85s on Wednesday, the Southridge High School girls golf team won the Class 3A state championship at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.

Therese Warner finished fifth overall with a two-day total of 161, and Samantha Hui finished in a tie for sixth one stroke behind. But Southridge coach Spencer Reiboldt credited the team victory to his No. 3 golfer, Meredith Hibbard, who improved on her first-day 90 by firing an 87 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 23rd.

“Meredith played lights out, and I think that put us over the edge,” Reiboldt said.

For Reiboldt, winning his first team championship as Southridge’s head coach will be a tough feeling to beat.

“I’m tickled pink to be coaching these kids,” Reiboldt said. “They’ve got a lot of coaches around, but for me to be around them is just awesome.”

The Suns finished just ahead of cross-town rival Kamiakin by a final tally of 86.5-78. The Braves were led by Alexa Clark (77-80, 157) and Brianna Esvelt (79-80, 159), who finished third and fourth, respectively.

Central Kitsap’s Brittany Kwon fired a tournament-low 73 on Wednesday to win the individual championship by five strokes with a two-day total of 150.

3A Boys

McGwire Hanson of Kamiakin dropped three strokes off his first round and fired a 77 at Creek at Qualchan Golf Course to finish in a tie for 21st.

The struggles continued for Hanson’s teammate and MCC champ Bolton Dauenhauer, who shot an 84 to finish the championship in 39th with a two-day total of 162.

Hanford’s Gabe Cach fell down the leaderboard as well, carding an 83 to finish tied for 23rd with a two-day 158.

Mercer Island’s Zach Evens shot a tournament-low 66 on Wednesday, but lost in the sudden-death playoff to Spencer Tibbits of Mercer Island. The two posted 139s to make it into the playoff.

2A Girls

Grandview’s Teagen Parrish fell back on the leaderboard with a second-round 99 to end up tied for 29th at Columbia Point Golf Course.

1B/2B Boys

Scott Kimball and Steve Xiao helped move DeSales up the leaderboard at MeadowWood Golf Course in Spokane as the Fighting Irish ended up third in the team standings, just 2.5 points behind champion Ilwaco.

Kimball fired a 78 to post a 157 total and finish tied for fourth, and Xiao shot an 80 to end up in 11th at 164.

Tri-Cities Prep’s Hogan Jones shot an 86 to finish 14th with a two-day total of 169.

Palmer Guhlke of Davenport won the individual title with a 73 to shoot a two-day 147.

1B/2B Girls

Tri-Cities Prep’s Rachel Amijo skidded a bit at MeadowWood, carding a 100 to finish the tournament in 13th with a two-day total of 193.

Davenport Kaysa Panke took home the state title, shooting a second-round 79 for a 156 total, eight shots ahead of Pomeroy’s Deana Caruso.

DeSale’s two-time defending state champion, Emily Baumgart, was unable to defend her title because of a knee injury.
