The most expensive coffee in the country is right here in the Pacific Northwest.

And that could be bad news for your wallet as much of Washington grapples with chilly and cloudy weather, making the idea of a warm cup of coffee alluring.

Seattle ranks number one in the state for the most expensive cups of coffee. A coffee in the Emerald City averages $3.92, according to a Dec. 6 study released by SavingSpot from CashNetUSA, an online lender.

The city is also home to the first Starbucks — the world’s largest coffee shop chain with thousands of shops across 80 countries.

Four other Washington cities also have some of the highest costs per cup in the U.S., including Olympia, Kennewick, Tacoma and Bremerton. They make up the top 5 cities with the most expensive coffee on average, with Spokane at No. 7.

The cheapest coffee can be found in the Midwest and on the East Coast.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has the cheapest cup of coffee in the country at an average of $1.18 per drink. Kissimmee, Florida, and Phoenix, Arizona, follow.

Des Moines, Iowa, landed No. 5 on the list of cheapest coffee and Ann Arbor, Michigan, ranked No. 6.

California has the most coffee shops at 9,615. And Hawaii has the most coffee shops per capita.

For the study, menu information was collected from nearly 10,000 coffee shops across 2,500 cities in the U.S. Alcoholic drinks and other menu items containing the word “coffee” were left out. Then the examined coffee shops were reviewed through Yelp Fusion API.

The data was collected in September.
