Human remains as old as 1,000 years keep appearing near hiking trail, WA coroner says

Ancient human remains were found on Olympic Discovery Trail for the third time this month.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Office chief county deputy Brian King said a skull was first found on Jan. 15, according to Peninsula Daily News. Another bone was found on Jan. 18 when a person was walking on the beach in the same area and found part of a hip bone.

On Jan. 29, more human remains were found, according to Radio Pacific Inc.. Mark Nichols, coroner and Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney, said he took the bones to a forensic anthropologist, who found that the remains were between 500 and 1,000 years old.

The Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation then took over jurisdiction of the bones, which led to finding the second set of remains, Radio Pacific Inc. reported.

The other remains are being examined and if they’re Native American, the discovery will be reported to Native American tribes, King 5 reported.
