Elections

Just 1-in-6 Tri-Cities voters has returned Aug. 5 ballots. There’s still time

Less than one-in-six registered voters in the Tri-Cities had turned in their ballots by primary election eve.

But it’s not too late to turn them in for the Tuesday, Aug. 5, election. Benton County voters will choose among local candidates in 11 races, as well as whether to approve a fire district levy.

The deadline to turn ballots in to a county certified drop box is 8 p.m. on Election Day. Voters who need to update their registration or register for the first time can still do so in-person at their local county elections center.

Of the 111,600 registered voters in Benton and Franklin counties, nearly 16,000 ballots — or 14% — have been returned so far.

In Benton County, just 14% — about 15,500 — of the 110,400 registered voters returned their ballots. About 1.4% of those have been “challenged” for issues including signature mismatches.

Just 1,200 Franklin County residents are voting in this election.

They’ll decide which of the two Connell mayoral candidates move on to the general election. About 27% of ballots — or 330 — have been returned there. Of those ballots, 2.4% have been challenged.

Drop boxes are located around the region, including near Kennewick City Hall, Jefferson Park in Richland, Benton County Elections Center and Connell PUD shop.
