Newhouse beating 6 Republicans in primary. Here’s his likely opponent in November
It was a tough primary for many Tri-Cities area candidates. Election night featured several tight races and crowded fields.
More ballots were counted in Benton and Franklin counties on Wednesday afternoon with more updates expected this week.
Final vote counts will be certified on Aug. 16.
The biggest race of the election was the 4th Congressional District, where seven mostly Republican challengers attempted to knock out U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse. Many cited his previous vote to impeach former President Donald Trump.
While they certainly sent a message to the 4-term congressman, they ultimately split the vote too much to push him out during the primary.
The closest race of the night in the region was a near 3-way heat in the 8th District House contest for Position 2.
Congress
Congressman Newhouse managed to fend off seven challengers, most of them fellow Republicans.
He will move on to the November election with 27% of the vote. He’ll face Democrat Doug White, who received 26% of the vote.
Loren Culp was third with nearly 22% of the vote. He was endorsed by former President Trump and had not conceded as of Wednesday, still posting on social media that the race was “tight.”
8th District House Pos. 1
Stephanie Barnard continued to be the clear leader in the race to replace Rep. Brad Klippert.
She finished with 69% of the vote, and will face fellow Republican Patrick Guettner in November. Guettner had 22% of the vote.
The incumbent, state Rep. Brad Klippert, did not seek re-election because he challenged Newhouse for the U.S. House. He received just 9% of the vote in that race.
8th District House Pos. 2
April Connors remains the top vote-getter with 35% to replace state Rep. Matt Boehnke.
Fellow Republican Joe Cotta has 32% of the votes as of Wednesday.
But he was just 250 votes ahead of Democrat John Christenson, who had 31% so far.
8th District Senate
Rep. Matt Boehnke had a commanding lead in his attempt to move to the higher chamber.
He now holds 67% of the vote, and will face off against independent Ronnie Batchelor in November. Batchelor has received 23% of the vote so far.
16th District Position 1
Incumbent Rep. Mark Klicker held off two challengers, with 67% of the vote to date. He’ll be facing Democrat Jeff Strickler in November. Strickler had 30% of the tally so far.
Benton commission
As of Wednesday, it looked like Richland Mayor Michael Alvarez will face former 16th District State Rep. William “Bill” Jenkin in November.
Alvarez had received 47% of the vote and Jenkin had 27% of the vote so far. Barry Bush was 198 votes behind Jenkin, with 25% of the vote.
