‘Is My Ballot Secure?’ WA election security discussion planned in Tri-Cities
Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs will visit the Tri-Cities this week for a discussion on election security.
The League of Women Voters of Benton and Franklin Counties will host Hobbs for a public discussion Wednesday, June 22, called, “Is My Ballot Secure?”
Hobbs will be joined by Benton County Auditor Brenda Chilton and Franklin County Auditor Matt Beaton for the discussion at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Basin College theater.
“The auditors will outline the ballot process, from the drop box to the county of ballots, and the safeguards in place if any irregularity occurs,” said the League of Women Voters in a news release.
Conspiracy theories and misinformation over election security have run rampant since former President Donald Trump’s attempt to delegitimize the 2020 presidential election results.
And as the 2022 midterms ramp up, elected officials who oversee elections are taking extra precautions to make sure the public stays informed about how elections really work — including in Washington state, where more than 1,000 candidates filed in May to run for public office.
A spokesperson for Hobbs said he remains “laser-focused on enhancing the security, integrity, and trust of our election systems.”
