11-year-old walking with mom on sidewalk killed in hit-and-run, Utah police say
An 11-year-old boy was walking with his mother when a car drove onto the sidewalk, striking and killing him, police in Utah said.
The mom and son, who had been sightseeing in downtown Salt Lake City, were headed home after getting off at a bus stop in West Valley City on Wednesday, Aug. 10, Roxeanne Vainuku with West Valley City police told KSL News.
They were close to home, the outlet reported, when the car left the roadway and struck the boy at about 11:40 p.m.
“The driver of the vehicle did not stop,” the West Valley City Police Department said.
The boy was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspected driver, a 45-year-old man, was arrested just before midnight on Thursday, Aug. 11, after police said they were looking for a light-colored, possibly gray Toyota Tacoma truck with front-end damage, the department said.
Neighbors told police that they spotted a car matching the description, according to police. Investigators determined the damage to the car was “consistent with the fatal accident.”
The man was “booked into jail for failing to remain at the scene” of a fatal accident, according to police.
West Valley City is about 11 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
