Deaf man biking with his 2 kids killed by hit-and-run driver in California, cops say
Police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run that killed a deaf man bicycling with his children last week in California, officials said.
The hit-and-run, which happened at the intersection of 14th and Jefferson streets in Oakland around 8:30 p.m. June 16, was captured on video, the Oakland Police Department said.
The department released the video on Thursday, June 23 that showed the vehicle, a black four-door Infiniti, striking Dmitry Putilov, 42.The man was with his two children, ages 6 and 8, who were also riding bicycles but not hit by the car, according to police and SFGate.
The children also are deaf, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said at a June 23 news conference.
“Him being deaf I am sure he could not have heard, obviously, the speed at which that vehicle was traveling.” Armstrong said.
The car did not stop and continued westbound toward Interstate 980, police said.
“For the person who was driving that car, that you have caused a tremendous hurt and harm to this family and to this community,” Armstrong said. “We cannot think that this is okay, this is tragic. For two children to see this happening is devastating for all of us.”
The police department and CrimeStoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at (510) 777-8570.
