A fire gutted a single-wide mobile home Sunday night while the people who lived were away from home.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the blaze on the 19500 block of South 2048 PR, according to a Facebook post from Benton County Fire District 1.

The residents were gone when a neighbor and a family member spotted flames and smoke coming from the home about 8 p.m., said Jenna Roberts, the public information officer with the fire district.

It’s believed the fire had been burning for some time before it was noticed.

Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire and prevented it from spreading to some low hanging trees and neighboring buildings.

Fire crews had help from the Kennewick Fire Department and the Benton PUD.

The home was mostly gutted but the residents are able to stay with family in the area.
