2 are dead after gunfire erupts at a crash in rural Benton County
Two people were found dead Saturday evening after a report of a crash and then gunfire in a rural area of west Benton County.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday that the deaths appeared to be the result of domestic violence.
“This appears to be a tragic, isolated situation between two people,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. It’s unclear if the deaths are being investigated as a murder-suicide.
About 5:30 p.m. Saturday and deputies were sent to a reported car crash near the intersection of North Rothrock Road and West Evans Road north of Prosser, according to the sheriff’s office.
A caller to 911 reported hearing an argument or yelling and then gunfire at the crash site.
Deputies and emergency responders arrived to find one person dead. They called for a Life Flight medical helicopter and attempted CPR on the second person, but could not save them, according to dispatch reports.
The sheriff’s office released no names pending notification of family members. Its Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
