18-year-old student jailed after she allegedly took a revolver to Kennewick High
A teen was arrested and jailed for allegedly having a revolver in her car in the Kennewick High School parking lot.
A concerned parent called Kennewick police Monday afternoon to report that Kelsey Cozad, 18, had allegedly jokingly pointed a revolver at the parent’s child during winter break, police said in a Facebook post Tuesday.
Cozad’s friend didn’t feel threatened, but was concerned after the fact and told their parents, who believed Cozad might be taking the gun to school.
Police met Cozad in the school parking lot and reportedly learned she had the gun in her glove box, police said. They obtained a search warrant and seized the gun.
While investigators don’t believe she planned to use the weapon, she is not legally allowed to have a gun because of her age or to take it to school. She was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of illegally possessing a gun and brandishing, police said.
Kennewick police asked parents to talk to their children about handling guns and that students are not allowed to have weapons of any kind on school property.
“It is never OK to point a firearm at another person, except when protecting yourself, even when joking,” police said. “Unfortunately, our community has experienced significant loss because of children playing with firearms.”
