Driver killed in late night head-on crash on Highway 240 north of Richland. 2 more hurt

A head-on crash on Highway 240 northwest of Richland left one person dead late Saturday night.

About 11:30 p.m. a Jeep Liberty driving northwest on the highway hit a 2014 Mercedes headed the other direction, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The crash was about three miles south of Highway 24.

The driver of the Jeep died before the person could be taken to a hospital. The identity of the driver is being withheld by the WSP until family is notified.

The two people in the Mercedes were taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.

The driver Andres Negrete-Gonzalez, 63, of Mattawa, was in stable condition Sunday, according to the hospital.

Irene Negrete, 61, of Mattawa, was also in the car, but no condition was immediately available for her Sunday.

Both were wearing seatbelts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Highway 240 crosses the Hanford nuclear reservation site along the edge of the portion of the Hanford Reach National Monument in Benton County.
