Tri-Citian shot by police on Interstate 182 out of hospital and in jail
A 33-year-old man is in jail after recovering from being shot by a Pasco police detective.
Santiago Ayala-Pineda was booked into the Benton County jail Friday afternoon about a week after he got into a confrontation with officers on Road 68 who were trying to arrest him.
He is facing first-degree assault charge for allegedly shooting a 38-year-old man on the 300 block of North Ely Street on July 19, according to Kennewick police. He is being held on $200,000 bail.
Detectives were looking for Ayala-Pineda when they were alerted that he was in a car on Road 68, police said. When they stopped the car on the on-ramp to Interstate 182, Ayala-Pineda tried hiding in the car, said Richland police Capt. Brigit Clary.
Officers spotted him and ordered him out of the car.
Instead, he grabbed a handgun and refused to drop it, Clary said. Detective Andy Corral shot and wounded him.
Corral was put on paid leave as part of department policy and the regional Special Investigations Unit was called in to investigate. The unit includes detectives from area police agencies who investigate officer-involved shootings.
Clary is leading the investigation said the initial interviews have been finished, and they are continuing to process evidence.
