UPDATE | Semi pulls into pickup, leaving 69-year-old trapped on Highway 395 in Pasco
A 69-year-old Moses Lake man was trapped inside his pickup for 30 minutes Thursday after a semi pulled in front of him on Highway 395.
Investigators believe the semi driver, Ying H. Zhu, 44, of Vaughan, Ontario, should have waited before taking a left from Foster Wells Road onto the highway just before 10:30 a.m., according to a Washington State Patrol report.
Traffic on Foster Wells has a stop sign at the highway crossing.
The semi collided with the pickup leaving it and the driver, Arlin K. Lidstrom, trapped for 30 minutes. Firefighters needed to cut him free from under the truck.
While his pickup was demolished, Lindstrom was still conscious and talking when he was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Trooper Chris Thorson said.
Later, Lidstrom was listed in serious condition.
Zhu, who was not hurt, was cited for failing to yield the right of way.
The wreckage slowed southbound traffic for about an hour and forced about a mile backup.
Vehicles were able to use the shoulder of the road to get around the crash, The Washington State Department of Transportation reported. The southbound lanes were open again by 12:30 p.m.
