A fire damaged eight Kennewick storage units Wednesday afternoon.

A passerby noticed smoke shortly before 2 p.m. coming from a unit at Southridge Storage at 6215 W. Brinkley Road, Fire Chief Chad Michael said.

When firefighters arrived, they found the fire had spread to two storage units.

They were able to get water on the blaze and keep it from spreading to more of the building. The fire was out within 20 minutes. Six more units had smoke damage.

Michael credited the quick actions of passerby and firefighters because the fire could have caused more damage since the units are connected and contain lots of combustible items.

Kennewick firefighters were helped by fire crews from Richland and Benton County Fire District 1.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
