Haven’t filed your federal taxes yet? Benton County gets more time

Good news for Benton County residents still working on their 2025 income tax returns.

The Internal Revenue Service has postponed the filing deadline to May 1 for some Washington residents because of storms, wind, flooding, landslides and mudslides that began Dec. 9, 2025.

Even if you didn’t have flood damage, the extension still covers anyone in Benton County, but not Franklin County.

Franklin residents still have a deadline of April 15 to submit income tax returns.

The disaster declaration was issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency following widespread flooding in Western Washington and along the Yakima River in Eastern Washington.

The extension benefits individuals and businesses in Benton, Chelan, Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, King, Kittitas, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Samish, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, Whatcom and Yakima counties.

The May 1 deadline applies to individual income tax returns and estimated tax payments normally due on Jan. 15 and April 15.

The extension also affects 2025 contributions to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and health savings accounts.

Taxpayers who receive late payment or penalty notices from the IRS should call the number on the notice to have the issue abated.

They may also call IRS Special Services, 866-562-5227.
