State football: James’ 4 TDs lead Hermiston past S. Albany, on to OSAA semis
Andrew James threw four touchdown passes and had over 250 yards of combined rushing and passing to lead the host No. 3 Hermiston High School football team to a 40-22 win over No. 6 South Albany on Friday at Kennison Field in an OSAA Class 5A state quarterfinal game.
Hermiston (9-2) travels to play No. 2 Wilsonville (10-1) next weekend in the semifinals.
Jonathan Hinkle rushed 15 times for 210 yards and two scores to lead the Bulldogs’ rushing attack. Joey Gutierrez caught four passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns — one for 80 yards — and Dayshawn Neal had five grabs for 70 yards and a score.
Jake Costello completed 24 of 34 passes for 331 with two TDs, but also threw two interceptions. In addition, Hermiston recovered four South Albany fumbles.

STEILACOOM 28, OTHELLO 26: Kyler Villareal scored two touchdowns, but the visiting Huskies let an early 13-0 lead slip away to the Sentinels on Saturday in Tacoma.
SPSL 2A champion Steilacoom (9-2) will host No. 2 Tumwater in the quarterfinals.
Othello (5-5) took its early lead on Villareal’s 81-yard TD scamper on the second play of the game, and Trevor Hilmes dashed in from 4 yards out later in the period for the two-score advantage.
Steilacoom’s JJ Lemming completed 19 of 38 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns, both to Emeka Egbuka.

ROYAL 35, FREEMAN 0: Corbin Christensen hauled in eight passes for 118 yards and two TDs, and Angel Farias had his third punt return touchdown in the past two weeks to lead the host Knights past the Scotties in their state playoff opener.
Two-time defending state champion and No. 1 Royal (11-0) will play No. 7 Okanogan (10-0) at the Apple Bowl in Wenatchee next weekend in the state quarterfinals.
Farias also caught a 58-yard touchdown from Sawyer Jenks, who completed 16 of 22 passes for 272 yards with no interceptions.
It was the seventh shutout of the season for the Knights, as they held Freeman (7-4) to just 62 yards of total offense and five first downs on the day.

COLVILLE 29, CONNELL 14: Tristen Garland scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the No. 2 Eagles road loss to the No. 5 Indians.
Dawson Flugel had 100 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns to pace Colville (9-1), which will play Newport in the quarterfinals.
Connell finishes the season with a 9-2 record. The Eagles lost to Royal in the state championship last year and reached the semifinals the season before that.

ASOTIN 31, TRI-CITIES PREP: 14: The host Jaguars took an 8-3 lead on Kobe Singleton’s TD run in the second quarter, but it was all Panthers from there in Friday’s first-round state game at Chiawana High School.
Bubba Valencia rushed for 110 yards on 24 carries. Singleton completed 10 of 25 passes for 127 yards, with two interceptions, and rushed for 64 yards on 15 totes.
Asotin (8-3) will face Davenport (8-2) in the quarterfinals. The Panthers are 7-0 in the first round of state since 2005, while the Jaguars (9-2) lost their opener for the second straight year (to Dayton-Waitsburg last season).
