The Hanford girls tennis team opened the 2013 season on a high note, defeating rival Richland 5-2 on Thursday at home.
The Falcons won three singles matches and two doubles matches in the victory, including the top two spots in singles.
“Beatrice Giugiuman played really well for us,” Hanford coach Jim Wilson said of his No. 2 singles player. “She finished real quick and was real efficient with her groundstrokes.”
Giugiuman won 6-2, 6-2 over Marina Garcia. Sierra Troxel opened her season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over Madeline Quick. Richland’s Hollie Crevey earned its lone singles win, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 against Hanford’s Vivi Giugiuman.
On the boys side, Richland cruised to a 6-1 victory, sweeping the singles matches.
“(Richland’s) Travis (Zuroske) is a big lefty and a really good player,” Wilson said of Richland’s No. 1. “Shane (Sandlin) gave him a tough battle, but Travis is pretty tough.”
Zuroske won 6-2, 7-5.
Wilson also cited his No. 1 doubles team for playing well, picking up the Falcons’ lone victory.
